MiZ – A Year Ago Today; Boris Garcia – Around Some Corner

MiZ, A Year Ago Today

A Year Ago Today is a pleasant surprise from singer-songwriter Mike Mizwinski and his skilled band MiZ. The 10-track release impresses with an eclectic batch of soulful creations that move from acoustic balladry, “Being Good at Being Blue,” to classic rock-tinged fare and even a brilliant newgrass-inspired arrangement titled “The Porcupine.” The Pennsylvania native, who cites artists including the Allman Brothers, Bruce Springsteen and Pink Floyd among his influences, delivers a mature series of tunes that range in theme from lost love to fallen heroes. Standout tracks include “North Jersey Queen,”  “Heroes,” written the night Greg Allman passed away, and “Stay Today Forever.”

Boris Garcia, Around Some Corner

Perhaps Boris’s strongest release to date. Full of the low-key, yet highly skilled songwriting and musicianship that distinguished the group in its past efforts. The Grateful Dead-title-inspired Around Some Corner, produced by journeyman band-whisperer Tim Carbone,  ebbs and flows with acoustic-tinged goodness throughout. The group locks into feel-good pockets on tracks including “Feather and Down,” “Mary Fields,” and the uplifting Americana- and maritime-themed “Captain of the Crew.”
